Import AutoCAD files

Last updated on Oct 27, 2025

Learn how to import artwork in DWG and DXF file formats into Adobe Illustrator to edit CAD drawings and integrate them into your designs.

Note

Use AutoCAD version 2.5 through 2007 to import and open files in Illustrator.

Illustrator supports most AutoCAD data, including 3D objects, shapes, paths, external references, splines, region objects, raster, and text objects.

When importing an AutoCAD file with external references, you can accurately place them on the Illustrator canvas using the DXF/DWG Options dialog box.

In Illustrator, select File > Open.

Select the AutoCAD file of DWG or DXF format, and then select Open. The DXF/DWG Options dialog box displays.

In the DWG/DXF Options dialog box, set the following options:

  • Original Size: Imports the file at its original scale from AutoCAD, preserving the actual dimensions.
  • Scale to Fit Artboard: Scales the drawing to fit within the Illustrator artboard.
  • Scale by: Controls the size of the imported DXF or DWG file.
  • Scale: Allows you to manually set the scale factor.
  • Unit(s): Sets the unit of measurement to interpret the file’s geometry.
  • Scale Lineweights: Adjusts the thickness of strokes (line weights) in a DXF/DWG file based on the scaling applied during import.
  • Layout: Lets you import between main drawing model and layout view.
  • Center artwork: Centers the imported content on the artboard.
  • Merge Layers: Combines them into a single layer.
