Brushes panel overview

Learn about the Brushes panel in Illustrator.

You can select Window > Brushes to open the Brushes panel. To use more options for your brushes, you can select the Brushes panel menu icon. 

Option

Function

New Brush

Opens a dialog box to create a new brush type, such as Calligraphic Brush, Scatter Brush, Art Brush, Bristle Brush, or Pattern Brush.

Duplicate Brush

Creates a duplicate of a brush in the panel.

Delete Brush

Removes the selected brushes from the panel.

Remove Brush Stroke

Removes brush stroke from the selected object.

Select All Unused

Selects all the unused brushes in the document.

Show Calligraphic Brushes

Displays only the calligraphic brushes in the panel.

Show Scatter Brushes

Displays only the scatter brushes in the panel.

Show Art Brushes

Displays only the art brushes in the panel.

Show Bristle Brushes

Displays only the bristle brushes in the panel.

Show Pattern Brushes

Displays only the pattern brushes in the panel.

Thumbnail view

Shows preview of brushes in the panel to identify the required brush.

List view

Shows brushes in a vertical list view.

Note

You can drag a brush to a new location to change its order and rearrange brushes based on their type. However, you cannot move a calligraphic brush to the scatter brush area.

Options of Selected Object

Opens a dialog box with options for the brush used on the selected object.

Brush Options

Opens a dialog box to edit the settings of the selected brush.

Open Brush Library

Allows you to select a library from the preset or custom libraries and adds it automatically to the Brushes panel.

Save Brush Library

Saves the current brush set in the panel as a new brush library.
