Learn how to distort objects in Adobe Illustrator to reshape or design them without affecting the paths.

Distort objects with the Free Transform tool

Select one or more objects using the Selection tool.

Select the Free Transform tool.

Start dragging a corner handle on the bounding box, not the side handle, and then do one of the following:

  • Hold down Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac OS) until the selection is at the desired level of distortion.
  • Hold down Shift + Alt + Ctrl (Windows) or Shift + Option + Command (Mac OS) to distort in perspective.

Distort objects using a liquify tool

Liquify tools are Warp , Twirl , Pucker , Bloat , Scallop, Crystallize, and Wrinkle.

Note

You cannot use liquify tools on linked files or objects that contain text, graphs, or symbols.

Select one or more objects using the Selection tool.

Select a liquify tool and select or drag over the objects you want to distort.

To isolate the distortion to specific objects, select the objects before using the tool.

To change the size of the tool cursor and set other tool options, double-click the liquify tool and specify any of the following:

  • Width: Controls the diameter of the brush used to warp objects.
  • Height: Defines the vertical span of the brush area.
  • Angle: Sets the angle of the brush shape for more directional warping.
  • Intensity: Determines the strength of the brush effect. Higher values apply stronger distortion with each drag.
  • Use Pressure Pen: Adjusts the brush intensity based on the pressure applied using a graphics tablet.
  • Complexity: Increases the number of spiked or jagged distortions created per brush stroke. (Available only in Scallop, Crystallize, and Wrinkle tools)
  • Detail: Sets the granularity or fineness of the distortion pattern.
  • Simplify: Controls how smooth or simplified the distorted paths become. Higher values reduce anchor points. (Available only in Warp, Twirl, Pucker, and Bloat tools)
  • Twirl Rate: Sets the speed and direction of the twirl effect. Positive values rotate clockwise; negative values counter-clockwise. (Available only in Twirl tool)
  • Horizontal: Adjusts the amount of horizontal warping or crinkling effect. (Available only in Wrinkle tool)
  • Vertical: Adjusts the amount of vertical warping or crinkling effect. (Available only in Wrinkle tool)
  • Brush Affects Anchor Points: Determines whether the brush will move anchor points directly. (Available only in Scallop, Crystallize, and Wrinkle tools)
  • Brush Affects In Tangent Handles: Allows the brush to affect the starting direction handles that control the shape of curves. (Available only in Scallop, Crystallize, and Wrinkle tools)
  • Brush Affects Out Tangent Handles: Allows the brush to affect the ending direction handles that control the flow of curves. (Available only in Scallop, Crystallize, and Wrinkle tools)
The Warp Tool Options dialog box displays the Global Brush Dimensions options and Warp Options checkboxes.
Specify the tool design options in the Liquify tool dialog box.
