Learn how to apply global and artboard rulers to accurately measure and align objects in your Illustrator document.

To show rulers, select View > Rulers > Show Rulers and to hide it select View > Rulers > Hide Rulers.

The View menu shows the Rulers menu among other menu items. The Show Rulers option is highlighted under the Rulers menu.
Select the Show Rulers option under the Rulers menu.

To use global rulers, select View > Rulers > Change to Global Rulers.

To use artboard rulers, select View > Rulers > Change to Artboard Rulers.

To show video rulers, select View > Rulers > Show Video Rulers and to hide it select View > Rulers > Hide Video Rulers.

To change the ruler origin, do the following:

  • Move the pointer to the upper-left corner where the rulers intersect.
  • Drag the pointer to where you want the new ruler origin. As you drag, a crosshair in the window and the rulers indicate the changing global ruler origin.

To restore the default ruler origin, double-click the upper-left corner where the rulers intersect. Changing the global ruler origin affects the tiling of patterns.

Note

Illustrator uses points by default, but you can change units for general use, strokes, and type by Edit > Preferences > Units (Windows) or Illustrator > Settings > Units (macOS). For a specific document, use File > Document Setup. You can override default units by typing abbreviations such as in, mm, Q, cm, pt, pc, or px when entering values.
