Add or remove sides from stars

Last updated on Sep 11, 2025

Learn more about how to add or remove sides from stars.

Select the Star tool from the tool panel.

Select the desired location on the artboard to create the shape.

To adjust the number of sides on a star shape, ensure View > Show Bounding Box is enabled, and the on-screen control widgets setting is set to Show Shape Widgets in the Control panel.

Tip

You can set values between 3 and 20 by dragging the side widget. To set more than 20 sides, select Shape in the Control panel and either drag the Star Slide Count slider or type a value in the field.

Select the Star Properties icon to modify any of the following settings:

  • Corner Types & Radius: Defines whether star corners are sharp or rounded and sets the roundness using a radius value.
  • Side Count: Sets the number of star points by defining how many sides the star has. Drag the slider to add or remove sides from stars.
  • Ratio: Determines the distance between the inner and outer points, controlling the star’s sharpness or fullness.

Use the Transform panel to adjust shape properties more precisely. You can open the Transform panel by double-clicking any corner widget.

A three-star is shown on the Illustrator artboard where the transform dialog box is opened to change the corner radius, which is highlighted.
Double-click a corner widget to open the Transform dialog box, where you can modify the properties of the drawn star shape.

Note

To always show the Transform panel when creating a live shape, turn on Show on Shape Creation in the panel menu. If you cannot view the transform panel icon in panels, select Window > Transform.
