Batch options

Learn how to batch process files in Adobe Illustrator by setting source folders.

Select Window > Actions.

In the Actions panel menu select Batch.

Select your Source:

  • Folder: Process all files in a specified folder.
  • Data Sets: Use variable data sets defined in the file
The canvas displays an artwork and the Batch dialog box with highlighted Source option.
Select a Source for files in the Batch dialog box.

Do the following if you selected Folder as the Source:

  • Override Action “Open” Commands: Ignores any open steps in the original action and opens files directly from the selected folder.
  • Include All Subdirectories: Includes all nested files and folders within the selected folder
  • Place Object in Same Document: Places all processed files into a single open document rather than creating new separate files for each

Do any of the following if the action contains any save or export command.

  • Override Action “Save” Commands: Saves processed files to a custom destination instead of the one recorded in the action.
  • Override Action “Export” Commands: Exports files to a user-specified folder, ignoring original export paths

Set an option for generating filenames when overriding Save and Export commands if you selected Data Sets for Source:

  • File + Number: Generates the filename by taking the original document’s filename, removing any extension, and then appending a three‑digit number corresponding to the data set.
  • File + Data Set Name: Generates the filename by taking the original document’s filename, removing any extension, and then appending an underscore and the name of the data set.
  • Data Set Name: Generates the filename by taking the name of the data set.

Select OK.
