Blend colors

Learn how to use the Blend commands in Adobe Illustrator to create smooth color transitions between three or more filled objects based on their stacking order or position.

The Blend feature creates a series of intermediate colors between selected objects. It's useful for achieving smooth gradient-like effects across multiple shapes. Blends only apply to filled objects, not strokes or unpainted shapes.

Select the Selection tool from the toolbar.

Select three or more filled objects by pressing Shift-click (Windows) or command-click (macOS).

Do one of the following based on how you want to blend:

  • To fill the intermediate artworks with gradual color blends from the frontmost and backmost filled artworks, select Edit > Edit Colors > Blend Front to Back.
  • To fill the intermediate artworks with gradual color blends from the leftmost and rightmost filled artworks, select Edit > Edit Colors > Blend Horizontally.
  • To fill the intermediate artworks with gradual color blends from the topmost and bottommost filled artworks, select Edit > Edit Colors > Blend Vertically.
The Blend Front to Back option is highlighted under Edit Colors in the Edit menu.
