Add or remove colors from swatch groups

Learn how to add or remove colors from swatch groups using the Recolor Artwork dialog box in Illustrator.

Add colors using the Recolor Artwork dialog box

Select the artwork using the Selection tool.

Select Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork. Then, select Advanced Options in the Recolor panel to open the Recolor Artwork dialog box.

Select the Edit tab in the Recolor Artwork dialog box.

Right-click anywhere on the color wheel where you want the new color to appear and select Add New Color.

Note

Alternatively, you can also select the Add Color tool and then click anywhere on the color wheel to add the color.

The Recolor Artwork dialog box is displayed on the screen highlighting the option to Add New Color.
In the Recolor Artwork dialog box, select Generative Recolor to create new color schemes for the artwork.

Select OK.

Remove colors using the Recolor Artwork dialog box

Select the artwork using the Selection tool.

Select Edit > Edit Colors > Recolor Artwork. Then, select Advanced Options in the Recolor panel to open the Recolor Artwork dialog box.

Select the Edit tab in the Recolor Artwork dialog box.

Right-click the color marker or color bar and select Remove color from the dropdown list.

Note

Alternatively, select the Remove Color tool and select the color you want to remove.

You cannot remove the base color marker.

The Recolor Artwork dialog box is displayed on the screen highlighting the option to Remove Color.
In the Recolor Artwork dialog box, select Reset to revert the artwork back to its original colors.

Select OK.
