Generate vector artwork from raster images

Last updated on Apr 1, 2026

Learn how to use Sketch to Vector to convert your raster images, like photos and sketches, into refined vector artwork, illustrations, and logos in Adobe Illustrator (Beta).

Sketch to Vector lets you transform raster images into vector artwork using simple prompts. Start with a hand-drawn sketch and based on the prompt, you can generate refined vector outlines or fully colored artwork. You can also convert your photographs into stylized illustrations with a personalized look. With customized prompts, you can further add or remove elements from the original image in the generated output. Additionally, Sketch to Vector lets you generate refined raster output from the image.

Sketch to Vector is now available for testing and feedback. Try it now in Illustrator (Beta).

Use Sketch to Vector to generate a refined vector or raster variation from your image.

Use the Selection  tool to select the image you want to vectorize.

In the Contextual Task Bar that appears, select Sketch to Vector.

You can also access Sketch to Vector   from the Generative    button in the toolbar, the Quick Actions section of the Properties panel, the Control panel, the Object > Generative menu, and the right-click menu.

In the prompt field, describe the vector artwork you want to generate from the image.

You can also use the Sketch to Vector options from the Properties panel.

In the Contextual Task Bar, select GPT Image 4o, GPT Image 1.5, Gemini 2.5 (Nano Banana), or Gemini 3 (Nano Banana Pro) partner model from the dropdown menu.

Use the options in the Sketch to Vector settings to customize the required output:

  • Creativity: Drag the slider higher for more creative variations, or lower to stay closer to the original. The slider defines how closely the generated variation matches the original image.
  • Output Type: Select between Raster and Vector output.

Select Generate. The original image remains unchanged, and the generated output appears on top of it.

Note

Sketch to Vector uses the original image as a reference when applied to a generated raster or vector output.

To provide feedback on the generated variation, use the following options:

  • Good output   : Upvote the variation if you liked it, and share detailed feedback in the form that appears.
  • Poor output  : Downvote the variation if you didn't like it, and share detailed feedback in the form that appears.

You can manage the generated variations from the Properties panel or the Generation History panel.
