Add text to documents

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to include text in your Adobe InDesign documents while adapting to your workflow.

You can add text to InDesign documents in several ways. Type directly for short content, paste text from other applications, or place word-processing files to import longer documents with formatting.

If you paste or place text without selecting a text frame, InDesign creates a text frame automatically.

Type text directly in a frame

Select the Type tool.

Create a new text frame by dragging or select inside an existing frame to place the insertion point.

Type your text. To edit a text frame applied from a parent page, hold Ctrl + Shift (Windows) or Cmd + Shift (macOS) and select the frame.

Paste text from other applications

Select Edit > Preferences > Clipboard Handling (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Clipboard Handling (macOS).

Select All Information to keep formatting or Text Only to remove formatting.

Copy or cut text from another application or InDesign document.

Select in a text frame with the Type tool or leave no frame selected to create one automatically.

Select Edit > Paste or Edit > Paste without Formatting.

Note

If imported text appears highlighted in pink, green, or another color, one or more composition preference options are active. Select Edit > Preferences > Composition (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Composition (macOS) to view which highlighting options are activated.

Adjust spacing when pasting text

Automatic spacing adjustment works primarily with Roman text and is available only when the text language is set to a Roman language in the Character panel.

Select Edit > Preferences > Type (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Type (macOS).

Select Adjust Spacing Automatically When Cutting and Pasting Words.

Select OK.

Insert placeholder text

Placeholder text fills the selected frame or threaded frames. Replace it by selecting the text and typing new content.

Select one or more text frames or select inside a frame with the Type tool.

Select Type > Fill with Placeholder Text.

Customize placeholder text by creating a text file named Placeholder.txt and saving it in the InDesign application folder. InDesign will use your custom content instead of the default Latin placeholder text.
