Adjust spacing around Japanese punctuation

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use Yakumono settings in Mojikumi to control spacing before and after Japanese punctuation in Adobe InDesign.

Japanese punctuation marks (Yakumono) follow specific spacing rules defined in JIS X 4051 standards. InDesign lets you customize these values through Mojikumi settings, which control the aki (space) before and after punctuation such as parentheses, periods, and commas.

This procedure modifies spacing for specific Yakumono character classes within an existing Mojikumi set. To apply Mojikumi settings to paragraphs, use the Mojikumi menu in the Paragraph panel. To create a new Mojikumi set, select Type > Mojikumi Settings.

Access detailed Mojikumi settings

Select the paragraph containing the punctuation you want to adjust.

Select Type > Paragraph.

Select Mojikumi, then select Basic.

Select a Mojikumi set from the Mojikumi menu, or select New to create a custom set.

Select Detailed to access character class settings. The Detailed view shows individual character classes for each Yakumono category, allowing precise control over specific punctuation marks. To remove spacing around parentheses, set both Begin Line and Middle Line to 0% Fixed for the relevant Yakumono class. Fixed option prevents InDesign from adjusting that spacing during justification.

Select Save, then select OK.

Configure spacing for punctuation characters

Select Type > Paragraph.

Select Mojikumi, then select Basic.

Select Detailed in the Mojikumi Settings dialog box to view character class settings.

Select the punctuation type you want to adjust in the character class under Mojikumi menu (for example, Open Paren).

Choose Previous Class or Next Class from the before/after pop-up menu to specify whether the spacing applies before or after the selected character.

Enter values in the spacing fields for Minimum, Desired, and Maximum as percentages of a full-width character or in bu units. When you adjust Minimum and Maximum values, InDesign uses these ranges during line justification and Kinsoku processing. Setting Minimum lower than Desired creates tighter spacing, while setting Maximum higher than Desired allows looser spacing when needed to fit text properly.

Select the triangle next to a punctuation category (such as Open Paren) to view subcategories (Corner Open Bracket, Round Open Parenthesis, Other Opening Parenthesis) for more specific control.

Set Priority values (1–9) to control compression order during line justification. Lower numbers compress first.

Select Save, then select OK.
