Learn how to draw freehand paths using the Pencil tool in Adobe InDesign.

Draw with the Pencil tool in InDesign to create open or closed paths with a natural, hand-drawn look. The tool places anchor points automatically as you draw, based on cursor movement. This helps create organic shapes and quick sketches directly on the page.

Draw an open path

Select the Pencil tool.

Position the cursor at the starting point and drag to draw the path.

Release to complete the path.

Draw a closed path

Select the Pencil tool, then position the cursor at the starting point.

Drag to draw the path.

Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) while dragging to close the path.

Release the mouse button, then release Alt or Option.

Edit an existing path

Select the path using the Selection tool.

Select the Pencil tool.

Position the Pencil tool near the path until the x disappears.

Drag to redraw the path section.

Connect two separate paths

Select both paths using the Selection tool.

Select the Pencil tool.

Position the cursor on one endpoint and drag toward the other path.

Hold Ctrl (Windows) or Cmd (macOS) while dragging to merge.

Release the mouse button, then release Ctrl or Cmd.

Adjust Pencil tool settings

Double-click the Pencil tool to open the Pencil Tool Preferences panel.

Set Fidelity to control how closely the path follows the cursor.

Set Smoothness to control the curve's smoothness.

Select Keep Selected if necessary.

Select Edit Selected Paths, then set Within if necessary.

Select OK.
