Create alternate layouts

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to create multiple page sizes or orientations in a single document in Adobe InDesign using layout duplication and liquid page rules.

Alternate layouts let you design for different page sizes, orientations, or aspect ratios within a single document. Each layout can have its own size and orientation, reducing the need for separate files.

Before you begin

Apply liquid page rules before creating alternate layouts to control how content adapts. Select the Page tool and then a page. Then select a liquid page rule from the Control panel.

Select Layout > Create Alternate Layout.

Enter a name for the new layout in the Name field.

Select the layout containing your source content from the From Source Pages menu.

Select a Page Size from the menu, or enter custom dimensions in the Width and Height fields.

Select Portrait or Landscape for the Orientation.

From the Liquid Page Rule menu, select Preserve Existing to keep the source layout's liquid rules, or select a different rule to apply new adaptation behavior.

Select Link Stories to connect text content between the source and new layouts.

Select Copy Text Styles to New Style Group to modify text styles independently for this layout.

Select Smart Text Reflow to remove forced line breaks and style overrides.

Select OK.
