Draw lines with the pen tool

Learn how to draw precise paths using anchor points and curves with the Pen tool in Adobe InDesign.

Use the Pen tool in InDesign to create straight and curved paths with anchor points. The tool provides precise control over path shapes for custom designs. It's useful for creating detailed shapes, tracing, and combining straight and curved segments.

Draw straight line segments

Select the Pen tool.

Position the cursor, then select to place the first anchor point.

Move the cursor, then select to place the next anchor point.

Hold Shift while dragging to constrain the angle.

Press Esc to finish the path.

Draw curved segments

Select the Pen tool.

Select and drag to place the first anchor point with direction handles.

Move the cursor, then select and drag to create the curve.

Continue placing and dragging anchor points to extend the path.

Press Esc to finish the path.

Draw straight segments followed by curves

Select the Pen tool.

Select twice to create a straight segment.

Select and drag to extend direction handles.

Select and drag to create a curved segment.

Draw curved segments followed by straight lines

Select the Pen tool.

Select and drag to create the first smooth point and draw the curve.

Select the smooth point to convert it to a corner point, then create a straight segment.

Draw two curves connected by a corner

Select the Pen tool.

Select and drag to create the first smooth point, then create the curve endpoint with direction handles.

Hold Alt (Windows) or Option (macOS) and drag the direction handle to split it.

Release Alt or Option, then select and drag to create the next curve.
