Create endnotes

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to create endnotes in Adobe InDesign and add references and citations in your document.

Endnotes add citations, references, and supporting information at the end of your document without interrupting the main text. Each endnote includes a reference number in the text and corresponding note content in a dedicated endnote frame. Use endnotes when you want all citations collected at the end of the document rather than on individual pages.

Add an endnote

Place the insertion point where the endnote reference number should appear.

Select Type > Insert Endnote.

Type your endnote text in the endnote frame.

To return to the main text, right-click within the endnote, then select Go to Endnote Reference. The endnote reference number appears as a superscript in the text. Endnotes are numbered automatically and renumber when added, deleted, or reordered.

Import endnotes from Word documents

Select File > Place.

In the Place dialog box, select Show Import Options.

Select the Word document containing endnotes.

Select Open.

Verify that Import Endnotes is selected in the Microsoft Word Import Options dialog box.

Select OK to complete the import. Endnotes from the Word document are imported into a new text frame. When multiple Word documents are imported with Scope to Document, all endnotes are combined into a single endnote frame.
