Produce print-ready PDF files

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Export documents as PDFs refined for commercial printing using appropriate presets and settings in Adobe InDesign.

Creating print-ready PDFs ensures accurate reproduction at commercial printers and maintains design integrity.

Before exporting, ensure links are updated, fonts are available and licensed, bleeds and margins are set correctly, colors are suitable for print (CMYK preferred), and preflight shows no critical errors.

Verify document links and resources

Select Window > Links.

Check the Links panel for missing or modified links.

Select any modified links and select Update Link from the panel menu to refresh them.

Updated links ensure your exported PDF includes the most recent versions of the images and graphics you've placed.

If links are missing, select Relink then navigate to the correct file location.

Run preflight check

Select Window > Output > Preflight.

Review the Preflight panel for any errors or warnings listed for your document.

Resolve critical issues such as missing fonts, low-resolution images less than 300 ppi, or overset text.

Export document as print PDF

Select File > Export.

Select a save location and enter a filename.

From the Format menu (macOS) or Save as type (Windows), select Adobe PDF (Print).

Select Save to open the Export Adobe PDF dialog box.

Adjust the various options within the Export Adobe PDF dialog box.

Select Export.

Configure PDF export settings

In the Export Adobe PDF dialog box, select a preset from the Adobe PDF Preset menu, such as [Press Quality] or [PDF/X-4:2008].

In the General section, confirm that Pages includes your intended page range.

Select Marks and Bleeds from the left panel and select All Printer's Marks if needed by your print provider.

Under Bleed and Slug, confirm bleed settings match your document setup.

Select Output from the left panel and set Color Conversion to Convert to Destination if converting to CMYK.

Select your print provider's specified color profile from the Destination menu.

Select Export.

Caution

Content extending beyond 200" × 200" is cropped during PDF export. For larger formats, scale your document proportionally or consult your print provider for tiling options.
