Convert anchor points

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to transform path anchor points while preserving overall shape in Adobe InDesign.

Paths contain two types of anchor points. Corner points create sharp direction changes, while smooth points form continuous curves. The Convert Direction Point tool allows switching between these point types and adjusting path behavior.
Convert using the Convert Direction Point tool

Select the path using the Direct Selection tool.

Right-click the Pen tool and select the Convert Direction Point tool.

Position the tool over the anchor point to modify, then apply the required action:

  • Drag direction lines from a corner point to create a smooth point.
  • Select a smooth point to convert it into a corner point without direction lines.
  • Drag direction lines from a corner point, release, then drag one direction line to create a corner point with independent handles.
  • Drag a direction line from a smooth point to convert it into a corner point with independent handles.

Convert using the Pathfinder option

Select the path using the Direct Selection   tool.

Select Window > Object & Layout > Pathfinder.

Select one of the points in the Convert Point section.

Note

You can also select an anchor point with the Direct Selection   tool, then select Object > Convert Point to convert it.
