Add new pages to a document

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use the Pages panel or menu commands in Adobe InDesign to insert new pages at specific locations.

You can add pages to your InDesign document individually or in groups. New pages inherit formatting from parent pages, and threaded text frames flow automatically across inserted pages. In documents with facing pages, InDesign preserves left and right page order unless you create island spreads. When Allow Document Pages to Shuffle is selected, InDesign automatically repaginates two-page spreads. To create a new document with a specific page count, use File > New > Document instead.

Add a single page after the active page

Select the page thumbnail or page numbers in the Pages panel to make a page or spread active.

Select Layout > Pages > Add Page.

Add multiple pages at a specific location

Select Layout > Pages > Insert Pages.

In the Insert Pages dialog box, enter the number of pages to add in the Pages field.

Select where to insert the pages from the Insert menu: After Page, Before Page, At Start of Document, or At End of Document.

If you selected After Page or Before Page, enter the reference page number in the adjacent field.

Choose a parent page from the Parent menu to apply formatting to the new pages or select [None] for blank pages.

Select OK.

Tip

To quickly add pages to the end of your document, select File > Document Setup and increase the total in the Number of Pages field.
