Learn how to manage cross-references in Adobe InDesign to update references, resolve missing destinations, and maintain accurate links as your document changes.

Cross-references help maintain navigation between related sections of your document and must be managed as content changes. Use the Cross-References panel to monitor reference status, update modified references, resolve missing destinations, and maintain formatting accuracy throughout your document.

Update cross-references

Select Window > Type & Tables > Cross-References..

Select an out-of-date cross-reference you want to update.

To update all cross-references, ensure that no cross-references are selected.

Select the Update cross-references icon.

Relink missing cross-references

Select Window > Type & Tables > Cross-References.

Select the cross-reference with the missing destination.

Select the panel menu icon, then select Relink Cross-Reference.

Locate and select the document containing the destination text, then select Open.

Relink the affected cross-references using the dialog box that appears.
