Learn how to modify text, adjust spacing, flip, and move text around path objects in Adobe InDesign.

Apply character and paragraph options to type on a path using this feature in InDesign. The alignment of type on a path is controlled by the alignment setting within the Paragraph panel. However, paragraph rules and paragraph spacing options have no effect on type on a path.

Edit and format text

Select the Type on a Path tool to select between characters on the path to place an insertion point or drag across the text to select characters.

Edit and format the text as needed.

Change start or end position of type on a path

Select the type on a path using the Selection tool.

Hover on the start position of the text path until you view a right arrow with the pointer . Zoom in on the path to select the bracket easily.

Drag the start or end bracket along the path to the new position. If you apply a paragraph indent value, it’s measured from the start and end brackets.

Flip type on a path

Reverse the text orientation while maintaining its alignment and formatting. Flipping type on a path is reversible and provides design flexibility for type following curves, circles, or custom shapes.

Select the type on a path with the Selection tool.

Select Type > Type on a Path > Options.

Select Flip in the Type on a Path Options dialog box, then select OK. You can also flip the text by positioning the pointer over the center bracket and dragging it across the path.

Slide type along a path

Move type along a path without changing the path, orientation, or formatting. Drag the center bracket at the midpoint of the text to reposition it anywhere along the path.

Select the type on a path using the Selection tool.

Position the pointer over the path’s center bracket until the center bracket icon appears next to the pointer.

Zoom in on the path if needed to select the bracket more easily.

Drag the center bracket along the path to reposition the text.

Drag the start or end bracket away from the path ends to create space, then drag the center bracket again if the text doesn’t move.
