Export documents as separate InCopy files

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to create individual InCopy files for each frame to allow independent editing without assignment packages in Adobe InDesign.

Export content as individual InCopy (ICML) files instead of assignment files. Each selected frame becomes its own file. To edit in context, open the InDesign document alongside them, or organize content by layers before export.

Create a document with one or more text frames, graphics frames, or placeholder items in InDesign.

Do either of the following:

  • Select the text or graphics frame of a single story or Shift-click to select multiple frames.
  • Select an insertion point in a story or select some text in a text frame using the Type tool.

Select Edit > InCopy > Export, and then select one of the following options:

  • Selection: Exports all selected text and graphics frames.
  • Layer: Exports all content on the selected layer.
  • All Stories: Exports every story that has not been exported already.
  • All Graphics: Exports every graphic that has not been exported already.
  • All Graphics and Stories: Exports every story and graphic that has not been exported already.

Enter a File name and select InCopy Document in Save as type option.

Select Save.

Note
  • Shared content appears in the Links panel just like imported graphics. If you move a shared file manually, you can use the Links panel to update its link.
  • The filename you enter becomes a prefix for all exports. Text frames use the prefix plus the first few words of content, while graphic frames are named sequentially.
