Can’t open documents in previous versions

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Convert files to open documents created in newer Adobe InDesign versions using backward compatibility methods.

Adobe InDesign documents are version-specific and cannot be opened directly in earlier versions of the application. When someone creates a document in InDesign 2024, for example, users with InDesign 2023 or CS6 cannot open that file without conversion.

When you attempt to open a document created in a newer version of InDesign, the application displays an error message stating that the file was created in a later version and cannot be opened. The document remains inaccessible, and no editing or viewing is possible in your current version.

InDesign provides two primary methods to resolve version compatibility issues, depending on your access to Creative Cloud services and your workflow requirements.

The Simple Saveback service is an Adobe Creative Cloud feature that automatically lets older versions of InDesign open newer files. If you are offline, the service is down, or the other person doesn't have Creative Cloud, you’ll need to manually export the file as an IDML (InDesign Markup Language) instead so that it can be opened in any version of InDesign.

When the version compatibility alert appears, select Convert.

Ensure your computer is connected to the internet for the conversion process. Wait while the document uploads to Adobe Creative Cloud and converts automatically.

Save the converted document when the Save As dialog appears.

The document creator is using a newer version of InDesign, and you need a format that opens in InDesign CS4 or later versions. IDML is an XML-based interchange format that preserves most document elements while providing backward compatibility to InDesign CS4 and later versions.

Ask the document creator to open the file in their version of InDesign.

Have them select File > Export.

Select InDesign CS4 or later (IDML) for Format.

Deselect Use InDesign Document Name as the Output Filename to add custom file name in the Save As field.

Select Save.

Open the IDML file in your version of InDesign.

Save the document as a native InDesign (.indd) file.

Note

When you open a document that was created in a newer version, some content may be modified or omitted if it relies on features not available in your version. Carefully review converted documents to ensure all elements appear as expected, paying particular attention to advanced features like interactive elements, effects, or newer typography controls.

For ongoing collaboration between team members using different InDesign versions, establish a workflow that uses IDML export as the standard file exchange format, or ensure all team members update to the same InDesign version to avoid compatibility issues.
