Switch between absolute and section numbering

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to switch between consecutive and section-based page numbering in Adobe InDesign to control how pages are referenced throughout your document.

The Pages panel provides two numbering display modes. Absolute numbering, which assigns consecutive numbers starting with the first page, and section numbering, which assigns page numbers based on defined sections.

Select Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > General (macOS).

Select a numbering method from the View dropdown in the Page Numbering section.

Select OK. To confirm the update, check how page numbers appear in the Pages panel and the page box.

Note

Changing the numbering display affects page references in the Pages panel and the page box in the lower part of the document window. It also affects how you specify page ranges when printing or exporting. It does not change how page numbers appear on the document pages themselves.
