Edit or delete named grids

Learn how to modify existing grid format definitions or remove grid formats you no longer need from your Adobe InDesign document.

With named grid formats in Adobe InDesign (Japanese or CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) version), you can manage multiple frame grids from a single shared format. Editing a format instantly updates all connected grids, while deleting one removes the link but keeps the text formatting intact. The grids integrate seamlessly with Flex layout containers for responsive changes. You can synchronize Named Grids across documents through the Book panel.

Edit a named grid format

Select Window > Type & Tables > Named Grids.

Select the grid format you want to modify in the panel. To update all frame grids that use this format without having any selected, hold Shift + Ctrl + Alt (Windows) or Shift + Command + Option (macOS) while double-clicking the grid format name in the Named Grids panel.

Select the panel menu icon and then select Named Grid Options, or double-click the grid format name.

Adjust settings in the Modify Named Grid dialog box, such as font, size, character spacing, line spacing, or alignment options. You may also see Responsive Spacing options when the grid is nested within a Flex Container.

Select OK.

Delete a named grid format

Select Window > Type & Tables > Named Grids.

Select the grid format name you want to remove from the panel.

Select Delete Named Grids from the panel menu, or select the Delete icon at the bottom of the panel.

When you delete a grid format, the visual formatting applied to text in frame grids remains unchanged, but the connection between those grids and the format is removed. The text will now be treated as Override formatting unless a new style is applied.

The grid format is now removed from your Named Grids panel. Frame grids that previously used this format retain their appearance but are no longer linked to a named format.
