Generative AI in InDesign FAQ

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Get answers to common questions about the generative AI features in Adobe InDesign, including access, usage, and commercial safety.

InDesign includes four Adobe Firefly-powered generative AI features: Text to Image, Generative Expand, Generative Fill (beta), Alt Text, Generate Text, and AI Assistant. These features are designed for safe commercial use and are available wherever Adobe provides services, except mainland China and Russia.

No. InDesign users can access generative AI features as part of your existing InDesign license at no additional cost.

No. Generative AI features complement existing InDesign tools and workflows, providing additional creative options rather than replacing current functionality.

The technical requirements for generative features are the same as the InDesign technical requirements.

Except Alt Text and AI Assistant all other generative AI features are available in English only, wherever Adobe provides services. Alt Text is generated based on the Language of the [Basic Paragraph] style of the document. These features are not available in mainland China.

Yes. All the images generated using the generative AI features are editable outputs that can be edited like any other image in InDesign.

All variations are downloaded to your computer in C:\Users\<username>\Documents\InDesign GenAI Assets (Windows) or /Users/username/Documents/InDesign GenAI Assets (macOS). You can see all the placed variations in the Links panel.

For images generated using GenAI features, you'll see the OK icon in the Status section of the Links panel. Right-click the placed variation, select Edit With, and then select any application.

Use simple, direct language with three to eight words describing what you want: character, color, scene, or texture. For example, "sunrise behind mountains" or "soft sheep wool texture" work better than command-style phrases.

The Firefly model returns 2K resolution for generated images and up to 4K resolution for expanded images in InDesign.

Generative Credits are consumed when you use generative AI features in InDesign. For detailed information about credit allocation, limits, and usage, see Generative credits.

Commercial use refers to any type of usage that generates commercial activity for you, your brand, or your business. For example, selling, using print and digital promotional materials or in the sale of products and content.

As part of our effort to design Firefly to be commercially safe, we are training the initial model on Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public-domain content where copyright has expired. However, we cannot provide assurance about any specific output and that requires each creator to do their own due diligence.

It’s important for us to create a model that respects our customers and aligns with our company values. In addition to training on inclusive datasets, we continually test our model to mitigate the risk of harmful stereotypes. The Firefly team is working hard to identify and resolve any issues as we find them. At the same time, you can report negative results using the Report option available in every image.

You can use Content Credentials to add extra information about yourself and your creative process directly to your assets.

InDesign automatically appends Content Credentials to files generated using generative AI features and export as JPG, PNG, SVG, or SVA so you know when an image was created or edited in InDesign, using the generative AI technology of Firefly.
