Set general preferences

Learn how to configure default panel positions, measurement units, and display options in Adobe InDesign.

General preferences control core behavior settings, including page numbering display, font handling, and scaling calculations. These settings apply to all new documents created after you configure them. To modify preferences that affect only the current document, open that document before accessing the Preferences dialog box.

With no documents open, select Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > General (macOS).

Select a preferred page numbering method from View in the Page Numbering section to control how page numbers appear in the Pages panel.

Specify a threshold value in the Font Downloading and Embedding section to specify a threshold to trigger font subsetting based on the number of glyphs a font. This setting affects font downloading options in the Print and Export dialog boxes and can help to control file size.

In the When Scaling section, select Apply To Content if you want text point size to change proportionally when you scale a text frame.

Select Adjust Scaling Percentage to display both the original and new point size in parentheses when scaling text, helping you track transformations.

Select OK to save your preferences.
