Edit parent pages

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Edit parent pages to update repeating elements, manage names and spreads, and use breaks to control text flow in Adobe InDesign.

Parent pages serve as templates for your document. Modifications made to parent pages are reflected throughout your document, making them useful for updating repeating elements such as logos, page numbering, or layout grids.

When you override or detach a parent page object on a particular page, that object may not update to reflect changes made on the parent page.

Resize parent pages

Select Window > Pages to open the Pages panel.

Create a parent page or double-click the existing one you want to edit.

Make changes to the parent page layout in the document window.

Resize the parent page by selecting it with the Page tool and adjusting the required dimensions in the Control panel.

You can use multiple views to see the results of parent edits. Select Window > Arrange > New Window for [file name], and then select Window > Arrange > Tile. Set one view to a page, and the other view to the parent applied to that page. Then edit the parent and view the page update.

Change parent page options

Parent page options control properties such as names, prefixes, and structural relationships. These settings help maintain organized parent page systems in complex documents.

Select Window > Pages.

In the Pages panel, select the parent spread you want to modify.

Select Parent Options For <parent name> to open the Parent Options dialog box.

Update the Prefix field to change the identifier that appears next to document page icons (up to four characters).

Update the Name field to change the descriptive name displayed in the Pages panel.

Select a different parent from the Based on Parent menu, or select None to remove the base parent.

Modify the Number of Pages value to change the number of pages in the parent spread (up to ten pages).

Select OK.

Note

Changing the number of pages in a parent spread does not automatically adjust the document pages that use it. You may need to reapply the modified parent to the affected document spreads.
