Set preferences for Track Changes

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how added, deleted, and moved text appears when Track Changes is turned on, and customize change bar visibility and user color assignments in Adobe InDesign.

Configure these settings before turning on Track Changes to ensure consistent change markup throughout your collaborative workflow. Changes to these preferences affect only how tracking appears, not whether tracking is enabled.

Tracked changes preferences let you customize the appearance of editorial markup, including text color, background highlighting, and marking methods for additions, deletions, and moved content. You can also control the change bar display and ensure each team member has a unique color assignment.

Select Edit > Preferences > Track Changes (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Track Changes (macOS).

Select the checkbox for each type of change you want tracked: Added Text, Deleted Text, or Moved Text.

For each change type, specify the Text and Background color, and Marking method.

Select Prevent Duplicate User Colors to ensure each contributor is assigned a different color for easier identification.

Select the Change Bars, choose a color from Change Bar Color, and Location of change bars.

Select Include Deleted Text When Spellchecking if you want the spell checker to process text marked for deletion.

Select OK.

The default marking methods include highlighting for added text, strikethrough with highlighting for deleted text, and a combination of strikethrough (at the original location) and boxed highlighting (at the new location) for moved text. Change bars appear as vertical lines in the margin adjacent to lines containing tracked changes.
