Arrange objects in a stack

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to arrange objects in a stack in Adobe InDesign to control the front-to-back order of overlapping objects.

Overlapping objects follow a stacking order based on when they are created or imported, with newer objects appearing in front by default. Use the Arrange commands to change an object’s position within the same layer. To control stacking order across layers, use the Layers panel, where objects on higher layers always appear in front of those on lower layers.

Change an object's position in the stack

Select the object you want to reposition using the Selection  tool.

Choose Object > Arrange, then select an option to change the object’s position in the stack: Bring to Front, Send to Back, Bring Forward, or Send Backward.

Reorder objects within a layer using the Layers panel

Select Window > Layers.

Select the right arrowicon next to the layer name to reveal the objects within that layer.

Drag an object's name up or down in the list to change its position in the stacking order.
