Edit InDesign documents with InCopy on the web (beta)

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use browser-based editing to collaborate on Adobe InDesign text frames in real time.

InCopy on the web (beta) lets writers and editors modify text directly in their browsers while designers work in InDesign. Real-time sync keeps the desktop app and web aligned. Frame locking prevents simultaneous edits, shows the collaborator’s avatar and name, and highlights the frame in the collaborator's color, alerting InDesign users when attempting to edit a locked frame.

Note

Share your InDesign document for text editing

Create or open any InDesign document.

Select Share in the top-right corner.

Select Share for text editing.

Select Save.

In the Save to Adobe cloud storage dialog box, set a name in the Save As field, select Your files, and then select Save. InDesign converts the document to INDDL format and uploads it to Creative Cloud.

Enter collaborator email addresses in the Share document dialog box.

Select Invite to edit copy. Collaborators receive an email with a link to open the document in their browser. You can also access this workflow by selecting File > Share for Text Editing (beta), then select Copy link and share the link with your collaborators.

Edit text in the browser

Open the shared document link in Google Chrome. Sign in with your Adobe ID if prompted.

Hover over any text frame. The cursor changes, indicating the frame is editable.

Place your pointer inside the frame to begin editing. Use the bold icon and italics icon to format the text.

Select the Focus Mode icon to switch into a clean, distraction-free writing space. Threaded frames show how text flows across multiple containers. If text exceeds the available space, an overset text icon appears on the frame.

Make your changes and select the Go Back icon. The updates are automatically synced with the InDesign document.

About real-time sync and sync status

  • The desktop app and web remain aligned with each other through real-time sync.
  • Frame locking prevents two users from editing the same text frame at once.
  • Locked frames display the collaborator’s avatar, name, and color highlight.
  • InDesign users see collaborator presence and get an alert if they try to edit a locked frame.

Cloud sync status indicates whether the desktop app and web are aligned:

  • shows that the desktop app and web are in sync.
  • shows that the changes made in the InDesign desktop app have not synced with the web. You need to reload the document.

Limitations of InCopy on the web (beta)

  • Supported only in Google Chrome.
  • Some file formats (for example, BMP, SVG, GIF, PDF, JPG with effects, MP4) may not render correctly.
  • Previously shared documents from ID beta releases must be reshared.
  • INDDL files saved in Projects open in the web version. To open it in InDesign, right-click the file, then select Move > Your Files.
