Use Kinsoku settings

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to apply line break rules for Asian text using built-in or custom Kinsoku character sets in Adobe InDesign.

Kinsoku settings prevent specific characters from appearing at the beginning or end of lines in Asian typography and ensure text composition follows established typographic conventions.

Apply these settings to Japanese, Chinese, and Korean text in InDesign. The Japanese text includes hard and soft Kinsoku sets, where soft sets omit long-vowel symbols and small hiragana characters. Chinese and Korean versions include specialized Kinsoku sets. Use these predefined sets or create custom sets to match your project needs.

Select Kinsoku settings for a paragraph

Select a paragraph or frame containing the text to format using the Type  tool.

Select Type > Paragraph.

Select an option from the Kinsoku set drop-down menu. To disable Kinsoku settings, choose No Kinsoku.

Create a custom Kinsoku set

Select Type > Kinsoku Settings.

Select New in the Kinsoku Shori Set dialog box.

Enter a name for the new set and specify the existing set on which the new one will be based.

Add a character using one of the following options:

  • Enter the character in the Entry box, then select Add.
  • Select a code system from the character drop-down menu, enter the code, and select Add.

You can verify a character’s code by selecting it in the list and choosing a code system from the character drop-down menu. The code appears in the text box.

To delete a character, select it, then press Backspace (Windows) or Delete (macOS).

Select Save to save the settings.

Control Kinsoku break behavior

Select the paragraph or frame.

Select Type > Paragraph and in the Paragraph panel menu, select Kinsoku break type and choose an option:

  • Push in First: To keep Kinsoku characters on the same line
  • Push out First: To move them to the next line
  • Push out Only: To always move them
  • Prioritize Adjustment Amount: To push in text when pushing out would cause more spacing

Apply Kinsoku hanging

Select the text you want to affect.

Select Type > Paragraph and in the Paragraph panel menu, select Kinsoku Hang Type and choose an option:

  • None: For no hanging
  • Regular: For hanging when the paragraph uses justification
  • Force: For placing hanging characters outside the margin before applying justification

Hanging controls whether Japanese punctuation marks, such as Kuten or Touten, extend outside the margin while aligning to the text frame edge. Specify which characters can hang in Hanging punctuation within the Kinsoku Shori Set dialog box.

Highlight Kinsoku processing

Select Edit > Preferences > Composition (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Composition (macOS).

Select Kinsoku, then select OK. When highlighting is enabled, Kinsoku items appear in blue-gray. Characters pushed in stay on the same line and appear in red, while characters pushed out to the next line appear in blue. This visual feedback helps you edit and refine text composition.

Delete a custom Kinsoku set

Select Type > Kinsoku Settings.

In the Kinsoku Shori Set dialog box, select the custom Kinsoku set from the Kinsoku settings drop-down menu.

Select Delete Set. When you delete a Kinsoku set, the text that used it returns to default settings. You cannot delete the predefined Kinsoku settings included with InDesign.
