Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to add vertical separator lines between columns to improve readability and layout clarity in Adobe InDesign.

Column rules are vertical lines that separate columns in multi-column text frames, improving readability and creating polished layouts. They appear only in frames with two or more columns and extend from the top line’s ascent to the bottom line’s descent.

Tip

For single-column frames or to create custom dividers between separate text frames, consider using the Line tool or drawing vertical rules manually.

Access column rule settings

Select the multi-column text frame using the Selection tool.

Select Object > Text Frame Options.

Select the Column Rules tab.

Configure column rule appearance

Select Object > Text Frame Options and then select Column Rules.

Select Insert Column Rules.

Set the Weight to control rule thickness.

Select a Type (such as Solid, Dashed, or Dotted).

Select a Color and adjust the Tint percentage as needed.

Select Preview to see changes as you adjust settings.

Select OK.

Adjust column rule position

Select Object > Text Frame Options and then select Column Rules.

Select Insert Column Rules.

Modify Start and End values to shorten or extend rules within the frame.

Enter an Offset value under Horizontal Position to shift rules left or right.

Select Overprint Stroke when preparing files for professional printing.

Select OK.

Note

To apply consistent column rule formatting across multiple text frames, select Window > Styles > Object Styles, create a new style from the panel menu, and then configure Text Frame Column Rule Options within the Basic Attributes.
