Open, close, or delete object libraries

Learn how to reopen library files, remove them from the workspace, or permanently delete stored library files in Adobe InDesign.

Manage object libraries in InDesign by reopening existing INDL files, closing library panels, or deleting stored library files from the system. Opening displays the library as a panel for asset reuse, while closing removes only the panel from the workspace. Permanently deleting the library file removes it from local storage.

Open an existing library

Select the library file from the Window menu if it's already open in the current session.

If not open, select File > Open, then select one or more library files. InDesign converts libraries from earlier versions to the current format and prompts you to save them with a new name.

Close a library

If a library is already open in the current session, select the library file name from the Window menu.

Choose the tab for the library you want to close.

Select the panel menu icon, then choose Close Library. Closing an object library removes it from the current session but doesn’t delete its file.

Delete a library permanently

Open Explorer (Windows) or Finder (macOS) and locate the library file (INDL).

Drag the file to the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash (macOS).
