Change the toolbox layout

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to select a layout option to display tools as a single column, double column, or horizontal row on Adobe InDesign.

The toolbox provides quick access to all InDesign tools for selection, drawing, type, transformation, and navigation. By default, it displays as a single vertical column, but you can adapt it to suit your screen size, layout, and workspace preferences. However, the positions of tools within the toolbox remain fixed and cannot be rearranged.

Select Edit > Preferences > Interface (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Interface (macOS).

In the Preferences dialog box, locate the Floating Tools Panel menu.

Select your preferred layout option: Single Column, Double Column, or Single Row.

Select OK.

Tip

You can also switch the layout by selecting the double-arrow at the upper-left of the toolbox.
