Create documents with presets

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use blank document presets with predefined dimensions and settings to quickly start your design projects in Adobe InDesign.

Blank document presets offer predefined size and layout settings to help you start new InDesign projects quickly. They are organized by category, such as Print, Web, and Mobile, making it easy to choose a suitable starting point. Presets define structural settings like page size, orientation, margins, columns, and bleed. You can adjust these settings before creating your document to match your needs.

Customize preset settings before creating a document

Select File > New > Document.

Select a category tab: Print, Web, or Mobile

Browse the available presets, then select one that matches your project requirements.

In the PRESET DETAILS panel, enter a name for the document.

Modify Width and Height values by typing new dimensions or using the arrow controls.

Select a different Orientation (Portrait or Landscape) if needed.

Adjust the Pages value to set the initial page count for your document.

Select Facing Pages to create spreads with left and right pages facing each other, or deselect it for single-page layouts.

Modify Columns, Column Gutter, Margins, and Bleed settings as needed for your design.

Select Preview to see a visual representation of your document, then select Create.

Create a document using a preset

Select File > New > Document.

Select a category tab: Print, Web, or Mobile.

Browse the available presets, then select one that matches your project requirements.

Review the preset specifications in the PRESET DETAILS panel.

Select Create. Your new document opens with the preset specifications applied.

Create a new preset

Document presets let you save commonly used document settings as reusable templates, helping maintain consistency and reduce setup time. Instead of re-entering page size, margins, columns, and bleed settings each time, you can apply a preset with your preferred specifications. This is especially useful for documents you create regularly, such as newsletters, business cards, or marketing materials.

Use this process to create a new preset that appears in the Document Presets menu when you start a new file. To change settings in an open file, use File > Document Setup instead.

Select File > Document Presets > Define.

Select New in the Document Presets dialog box.

Enter a descriptive name for your preset in the Document Preset field.

Specify your page size by selecting a standard size from the Page Size menu or entering custom dimensions in the Width and Height fields.

Set the number of pages, page orientation, and indicate whether you want facing pages.

Specify margin values by entering measurements in the Top, Bottom, Inside, and Outside fields.

The New Document Preset dialog box with the Facing Pages checkbox deselected and highlighted.
Deselect Facing Pages to set values for the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right margins.

Specify column settings by entering the number of columns in the Number field and the space between columns in the Gutter field.

To define bleed and slug areas, expand Bleed and Slug and enter the measurements for each area.

Select OK to save the preset, then select OK again to close the Document Presets dialog box.

Your new preset now appears in the Document Presets menu in the New Document dialog box (File > New > Document) and can be applied whenever you create a document.
