Manage inks for separation

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to control ink output, convert spot colors to process, and set ink density for accurate color separations in Adobe InDesign.

You can use the Ink Manager to fine‑tune ink behavior at output without altering your document’s color data. It allows you to convert spot colors to process, resolve duplicate spot names, and adjust ink density for proper trapping. Because it affects only output, it’s ideal for working with print service providers who need press‑specific separations while keeping the source file intact.

Specify which inks to separate

Select File > Print and select Output from the list on the left.

For Color, choose Separations or In-RIP Separations.

Review the ink list and verify that printer icons appear next to inks you want to separate.

Select the printer icon next to any ink name to toggle separation on or off for that specific ink. When the printer icon displays next to a color name, InDesign creates a separation plate for that color. Selecting the icon removes it and prevents separation output for that ink.

Convert spot colors to process

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

Select the panel menu icon from the Separations Preview panel and then select Ink Manager.

In the Ink Manager dialog box, locate the spot color you want to convert in the ink list.

Select the spot color icon next to the color name to convert it to a process color. When you convert a spot color to process, InDesign uses the CMYK values defined in the color swatch to create the separations.

Verify the icon changes to display CMYK quadrants, indicating the color will now separate as process colors.

Create ink aliases for duplicate spot colors

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

Select the menu icon from the Separations Preview panel and then select Ink Manager.

In the Ink Manager dialog box, locate the duplicate spot color in the ink list.

Select the Ink Alias menu for that color.

Choose the primary spot color name you want this duplicate to map to. After creating an alias, both colors output to a single separation plate, reducing printing costs when documents accidentally contain multiple versions of the same spot color.

Adjust ink density

Select Window > Output > Separations Preview.

Select the menu icon from the Separations Preview panel and then select Ink Manager.

In the Ink Manager dialog box, select the ink you want to modify from the list.

Enter a new value in the Neutral Density field, typically between 0.001 and 10.000.

Verify the neutral density value matches your press specifications provided by your print service provider.
