Create layouts with hand gestures

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use the Touch workspace and drawing gestures to create layout elements on touch-enabled devices.

The Touch workspace is designed specifically for touch-enabled Windows devices, including tablets, touchscreen laptops, and desktop computers with touch capability. Documents containing elements created in other workspaces will display correctly, but you can only edit objects that are supported in the Touch workspace.

The Touch workspace automatically activates when you detach your keyboard from a touch-enabled device and returns to your previous workspace when you reattach it. You can manually switch to the Touch workspace by selecting Window > Workspace > Touch.

You can access four primary tools in the Touch workspace: the Drawing tool (exclusive to the Touch workspace), the Type tool for text frames, the Frame tool for graphics placeholders, and the Shape tool for rectangles, ellipses, and polygons. The Drawing tool allows gesture-based creation using 16 recognizable hand movements that InDesign converts into layout elements.

Create a new document or open an existing one.

Select the Drawing tool from the toolbar if not already active.

Select the Help icon in the upper-right corner to view the complete gesture reference guide showing all 16 available gestures.

Draw any of the supported gestures directly on your canvas to create corresponding elements.

Refine your elements using the panels on the right side of the workspace to adjust colors, opacity, alignment, and other properties.
