Export to EPUB

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use the Export command in Adobe InDesign to create reflowable or fixed-layout eBooks for digital distribution.

Export your InDesign document to EPUB using the Export command. Use Reflowable for adaptable text on different devices, or Fixed Layout for precise design with support for audio, video, and interactive elements.

Select File > Export.

Specify a location and File name in the Export dialog box.

Select EPUB (Fixed Layout) or EPUB (Reflowable) in Save as type (Windows) or Format (macOS).

Select Use InDesign Document Name as the Output Filename if you want the same file name.

Select Save.

Set EPUB export options in the Export dialog box and select OK.

Note

InDesign creates a single .epub file containing the XHTML-based content. To view the file, you need an EPUB reader. You can also use the Adobe Digital Editions reader, which you can download for free from the Adobe website.

EPUB Interactivity Preview panel options

The EPUB Interactivity Preview panel allows you to review interactive elements such as animations, buttons, and forms within a document before export. To preview interactivity in an EPUB document, select Window > Interactive > EPUB Interactivity Preview.

When you export an InDesign document to EPUB, you create an interactive file that is ready for viewing in an EPUB reader. Exporting to EPUB is a good way to create an interactive slideshow or a flipbook from an InDesign document.
