Print oversized documents

Learn how to use tiling in Adobe InDesign to print documents larger than your printer's paper size.

Document dimensions may exceed printer paper size, so InDesign uses tiling to divide the page into printable rectangles that fit the paper. These overlapping tiles can be printed, trimmed, and assembled to recreate the full layout.

Tile a document automatically

Select File > Print.

Select Tile in the Setup section of the Print dialog box.

Select one of the following options from the Tile menu:

Auto: Calculates the number of tiles required, including overlap.

Auto Justified: Increases overlap so that the right and bottom tiles align with the page edges.

Enter the minimum amount of duplicated information you want printed on each tile for Overlap.

The Overlap value must exceed the printer’s nonprinting margins and can be up to half the page’s shortest side.

Select Print to output all tiles at once.

Tile a document manually

Manual tiling lets you set each tile’s position individually and requires printing each tile separately.

Select View > Show Rulers.

Drag the intersection of the rulers to set the zero point at the desired upper-left corner of the tile you want to print.

Leave room for overlap and printer's marks when positioning the zero point.

Select File > Print, and then select Setup.

In the Setup section, select Tile, and then select Manual from the Tile menu.

Select Print to output the current tile.

Thumbnails print multiple pages as scaled-down previews on one sheet. In the Print dialog box, select Thumbnails and set the number per page. Paper orientation may change automatically, and marks and bleed or slug areas are excluded.
