Preview and explore fonts

Learn how to use live preview and filtering tools to explore font families and styles before applying them in Adobe InDesign.

InDesign provides real-time font preview capabilities that let you see how fonts look on your selected text before you commit to changes. Combined with filtering and search tools, you can quickly explore thousands of fonts and identify the perfect typeface for your design.

Font preview works with text selected in your document or displays sample text when no selection exists. The preview updates automatically as you hover over font names in the Character panel, Control panel, or Properties panel. This applies to both installed fonts and fonts from Adobe Fonts.

Preview fonts on selected text

Select text in your document using the Type tool.

Select Type > Character to open the Character panel.

Hover your pointer over different font names without selecting.

The selected text will update in real time to preview each font.

The font list displays icons indicating font types: OpenType icon, OpenType SVG icon, Variable fonts icon, TrueType icon, and Adobe Fonts icon. This helps you identify font technologies at a glance.

Preview font styles within a family

Select text in your document or select a text frame.

Open the font family drop-down in the Character panel or Properties panel.

Locate the font family you want to explore and select the arrow next to its name to expand it.

Hover over each font style name (such as Regular, Bold, Italic, Semibold, and so on) to see the preview applied to your text.

Tip

To adjust the preview size, select the icons at the upper-right corner of the font menu: Show smaller sample text size icon, Show default sample text size icon, or Show larger sample text size icon. This changes the sizes of both selected and sample text previews.

Filter and organize fonts

Open any font menu from the Character or Properties panel.

Select Filter fonts by classification icon to filter by categories such as Serif, Sans Serif, Script, or Handwritten.

Select Show Favorite Fonts icon, Show Recently Added icon, or Show Added Fonts icon to display a specific set of fonts.

Hover on any font and select the Add to favorites icon to save it as a favorite. You can also select Show Similar Fonts icon to view similar fonts.

Starred fonts and recently used fonts persist across InDesign sessions, making it easy to access your preferred typefaces. The font menu also displays recently used fonts at the top of the list for quick access.

Preview Japanese fonts from Adobe Fonts

Select Edit > Preferences > Type (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Type (macOS).

Select Enable Japanese Font Preview in 'Find More' in the Type Preferences dialog box.

Select OK and restart InDesign for the changes to take effect.

Select Type > Character to open the Character panel and select the Find More tab.

Browse the font list to preview Japanese fonts available from Adobe Fonts.

Turn off font preview

Select Edit > Preferences > Type (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Type (macOS).

Deselect Enable in-menu font previews in the Type Preferences dialog box.

Select OK to apply the changes.

When font preview is disabled, you'll see only font names in the menus, without live preview of your sample text display.
