Add, edit, and export file metadata

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use File Info to add searchable metadata to Adobe InDesign documents and export the metadata as an XMP file.

Metadata stores information such as author, title, copyright, and keywords. This information helps organize files and improves searchability across workflows. Use the File Info option to add, modify, or export metadata for an InDesign document.

Add or edit metadata

Select File > File Info.

Select a metadata category such as Basic, IPTC, or Origin.

Add or edit details such as title, author, description, keywords, or copyright information.

Review the entered information across categories as needed.

Select OK to apply the changes.

Export metadata as an XMP file

You can export document metadata into an XMP file and share it with other users. These XMP files act as templates for populating metadata in InDesign documents and other XMP-authorized applications. Exported templates are stored in a shared location accessible by all supported applications. They also appear in the bottom-center menu in the File Info dialog box.

Select File > File Info.

Select the Template option at the bottom-center of the dialog box and select Export.

Set a File name.

Select XMP Files (*.xmp) within Save as type.

Select Save.

Note

To view metadata templates in your system folder, open the bottom-center menu in the File Info dialog box and select Template Folder.
