Set up a printer

Learn how to configure printer drivers and PPD files to allow PostScript and non-PostScript printing in Adobe InDesign.

InDesign supports printing to PostScript® (Level 2 and 3) and non-PostScript printers through your system’s printer drivers. Proper setup ensures accurate printing.

For PostScript printers, InDesign uses a PPD file. Non-PostScript printers rely on the printer driver. Ensure the correct driver (and PPD, if needed) is installed.

Install the printer driver

Download the latest printer driver from the manufacturer’s website.

Install the driver following the on-screen instructions.

Restart your computer if prompted.

Verify the printer appears in your system's printer list.

Configure the PPD file for PostScript printers

Open printer settings in your system control panel.

Locate the PPD selection option (usually under Advanced or Device Settings).

Select the matching PPD file for your printer.

Apply the changes and close the dialog box.

Note
  • With Windows 11 version 24H2, Microsoft introduced Windows Protected Print Mode (WPP) to enhance print security. This opt-in feature disables PostScript (PSCRIPT5.dll) and OEM PCL drivers, blocking all v3/v4 drivers and favoring Windows IPP Class printer drivers.
  • To support this, InDesign introduced an IPP PDF Passthrough printing workflow for Windows 11 and compatible printers. Existing workflows remain unchanged. You can also select Let Printer Determine Colors when using PDF Passthrough with IPP Class drivers for improved color management.

Test the printer connection in InDesign

Launch InDesign and open any document.

Select File > Print.

Select your printer from the Printer menu in the Print dialog box.

Review the print settings to confirm proper communication with the printer. For PostScript printers, ensure PPD-specific options are available.

Select Cancel.
