Install plug-ins

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to install plug-ins in Adobe InDesign to extend functionality.

Plug-ins are software programs developed by Adobe and its partners to enhance functionality. Many plug-ins for importing, exporting, automation, and special effects come preinstalled in the Plug-ins folder. Most features are provided by plug-ins.

Run the plug-in installer. If no installer is provided, drag the plug-in into the Plug-Ins folder in the InDesign application folder.

Follow the installation instructions.

Restart InDesign if prompted.
The plug-in is available in InDesign and appears in the relevant menus, dialog boxes, or panels.

Note

You can use any commercial plug-ins designed for InDesign. Adobe Technical Support can help isolate problems related to plug-ins. If the issue is directly related to a plug-in created by another company, contact that company for support.
