Add or delete type on path

Learn how to add text to flow along the edge of an open or closed path in Adobe InDesign, and how to edit or delete it.

Adding text to paths lets you create dynamic typographic effects where text follows curves, shapes, and custom paths. This technique works with any vector path in your document, whether circular, wavy, or geometric.

Add type on path

Create a shape or path.

Right-click Type tool to reveal the flyout menu, then select Type on a Path tool.

Move the pointer over the desired path segment to view a plus icon next to the cursor.

Select the path to set an insertion point or drag along the path to specify the span for the text. If you drag to define a range, text appears only within that portion of the path. If you select once, text flows along the entire path length starting from your select point.

Enter the text directly on the path or paste existing text from the clipboard.

Delete type from path

Select one or more type-on-a-path objects using the Selection tool.

Select Type > Type on a Path > Delete Type from Path. If the path text is threaded, it flows to the next frame or path. If not, it’s deleted. The path remains, but all type-on-a-path attributes and threading elements are removed.

If the path’s fill and stroke are set to None, the path is invisible after you delete the type. To make the path visible, press the D key immediately after you select Type > Type on a Path > Delete Type from Path. This applies the default fill and stroke to the selected path
