Reset document settings and preferences

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to adjust preferences and object settings to establish defaults for all future documents and objects in Adobe InDesign.

Setting document defaults allows you to establish consistent starting points for new projects, saving time and ensuring uniformity across your work. InDesign applies default settings in two ways: document-level defaults affect new documents when no files are open, while object-level defaults affect new objects when nothing is selected in an open document. These settings persist until you change them again, making them ideal for establishing standard workflows.

Set document-level defaults

Close all open documents by holding Ctrl + Alt + Shift + W (Windows) or Cmd + Opt + Shift + W (macOS).

Select Edit > Preferences (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences (macOS).

Modify any settings in menus, panels, or dialog boxes according to your needs.

Set object-level defaults for a document

Open the document where you want to set object defaults.

Select Edit > Deselect All to ensure no objects are selected.

Select Edit > Preferences (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences (macOS).

Modify any settings in menus, panels, or dialog boxes according to your needs.

Reset all preferences to factory defaults

Quit InDesign.

Restart InDesign while holding Shift + Ctrl + Alt (Windows) or Shift + Option + Command + Control (macOS).

Select Yes when prompted to delete preference files.

Alert

Resetting preferences removes all customized settings, including workspace arrangements, keyboard shortcuts, and default values. Consider backing up your preference files before performing this action.
