Create PostScript files

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use PostScript files and PPD settings to generate device-independent or device-dependent output for prepress workflows in Adobe InDesign.

InDesign can save your documents as PostScript files optimized for different prepress workflows. Understanding the difference between device-independent and device-dependent PostScript files helps you choose the right method for your output requirements.

Create device-independent PostScript files

Device-independent PostScript files remove all device and driver dependencies, making them compatible with almost any output device. These files output as composite CMYK (and spot colors if any) and require separation in post-processing software or at the RIP using in-RIP separations. Use this method for composite prepress workflows where trapping and separation occur later in the production process.

Select File > Print.

Select PostScript File from the Printer menu in the Print dialog box.

Select Device Independent from the PPD menu.

Note

Device-independent PostScript files cannot be trapped in InDesign. Trapping must occur at the RIP or in post-processing software.

Review or change your print settings. InDesign uses the current page range when creating the PostScript file. Be sure to consult your printer for the correct color management settings. Change the transparency flattener settings to high resolution.

Select Save.

Specify a filename and location, then select Save.

Create device-dependent PostScript files

Device-dependent PostScript files contain information tailored to a specific output device, including optimized screen frequencies, resolution, and available media sizes. These files can be composite or separated and support all InDesign color output methods. Device-dependent files are ideal for pre-separation or trapping workflows using InDesign's Application Built-In or Adobe In-RIP Trapping features.

Select File > Print.

Select PostScript File in the Printer menu when your document will be processed by an OPI server or prepress application before reaching the RIP. This ensures InDesign maintains complete control over DSC compliance.

Select the PPD for your final output device from the PPD menu. Check with your printer for the proper PPD.

Review or change your print settings. InDesign uses the current page range when creating the PostScript file. Be sure to consult your printer for the correct color management settings. Change the transparency flattener settings to high resolution.

Select Save.

Specify a filename and location, then select Save.

Both device-independent and device-dependent PostScript files can only be printed to file, not directly to a device. For workflows requiring direct printing with driver features like watermarks, use a device- and driver-dependent method with an installed PostScript printer.
