Change transparency display settings

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to adjust on-screen transparency quality and performance in the Display Performance preferences in Adobe InDesign.

Display performance settings in InDesign determine how transparency effects appear on screen without affecting print or export results. Transparency effects can slow redraws in complex documents, so lowering preview quality improves responsiveness, while higher settings show more accurate visual results. This makes it easy to adapt preview quality to your current design needs.

Adjust the transparency display quality

Select Edit > Preferences > Display Performance (Windows) or InDesign > Preferences > Display Performance (macOS).

In the Adjust View Settings section, select a display option from the following:

  • Fast turns off transparency and sets the resolution to 24 dpi. Fast Display mode turns off the on-screen preview of all transparency effects, which can significantly improve performance when working with complex documents. The transparency effects remain active and will still print and export normally, only the screen preview is disabled.
  • Typical displays low-resolution effects at 72 dpi.
  • High Quality improves the display of effects at 144 dpi.

Drag the Transparency slider to adjust the quality of drop shadows and feathering effects.

Select OK.

Remove the white box effect in documents with transparency

If a white box or ghost border appears around transparency effects (typically with spot colors), select View > Overprint Preview to turn on overprinting.

If sending the document to a print service provider, ask them to enable PostScript overprint at the RIP, or flatten transparency with the Simulate Overprint option selected in the Output panel of the Print dialog box.

White boxes around transparency effects typically occur when drop shadows or gradients interact with spot colors. Turning on overprinting resolves the display issue by simulating how inks will combine on press. If the issue persists in the final output, coordinate with your print service provider about RIP settings or consider flattening transparency before export.

Alert

Before printing documents containing transparency effects, verify your display performance and overprint settings. Printing automatically flattens transparent artwork, which may affect the appearance of effects if the settings are incorrect.
