Apply text wrap to footnotes

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to apply text wrap to footnotes in Adobe InDesign to control text flow around objects.

Text wrap controls how footnote text flows around embedded or external objects. In InDesign, wrap behavior varies depending on whether an object is inline, anchored within the footnote, or positioned elsewhere on the page. The wrap affects only the text that follows the object’s anchor point within the same footnote.

Select the Type tool and place the insertion point within the footnote where the object is to be inserted.

Select File > Place to import an image or graphic.

Select the inserted object using the Selection  tool, then choose Window > Text Wrap.

Apply a text wrap option to the object.

Adjust offset values in the panel to control the spacing between the object and the surrounding footnote text. The footnote text reflows around the object, wrapping only the text that follows the anchor point. The footnote area expands upward as required to accommodate the wrapped text.
