Learn about the settings available in the Create Alternate Layout dialog box in Adobe InDesign.

Configure alternate layouts to understand how each setting affects the new layout created from your source pages. These settings appear in the Layout > Create Alternate Layout dialog box.

Setting

Description

Name

Specifies the name displayed for the alternate layout in the Pages panel.

From Source Pages

Determines the existing layout that serves as the starting point for the new alternate layout.

Page Size

Sets the page dimensions for the alternate layout from preset sizes or custom dimensions.

Width and Height

Displays and controls the exact page dimensions. Manually entering values automatically changes Page Size to Custom.

Orientation

Determines whether pages are in Portrait or Landscape. Switching orientation switches the Width and Height values.

Liquid Page Rule

Controls how objects resize and reposition when page dimensions change. Select Preserve Existing or apply a new rule.

Link Stories

Links objects to the source layout, allowing updates to be managed through the Links panel.

Copy Text Styles to New Style Group

Duplicates styles into a separate group for layout-specific formatting.

Smart Text Reflow

Removes forced line breaks, discretionary hyphens, and manual kerning adjustments to allow natural reflow in the new layout.
