Import or export word lists

Last updated on Jun 2, 2026

Learn how to use text files to share spelling exceptions and custom dictionary entries in Adobe InDesign.

You can export user dictionary word lists as text files (TXT) to share or transfer spelling exceptions between projects or users. Exported lists can be edited or imported into other InDesign installations and support Added Words and Removed Words, but not Ignored Words.

Before you begin

Make sure that spaces, tabs, or paragraph returns separate the words in the text file.

Export a word list

Select Edit > Spelling > User Dictionary.

Select the Target and Language.

Select the dictionary category from the Dictionary List drop-down menu, either Added Words or Removed Words.

Select Export, specify the filename and save location, then select Save.

Import a word list

Select Edit > Spelling > User Dictionary.

Select the Target and Language.

Select the dictionary category from the Dictionary List drop-down menu where you want the imported words to appear.

Select Import, locate your prepared text file, then select Open.
